In 2006 a group of culture workers, librarians, publishers and academics based in Umeå were having a discussion about the state of literature in the north of Sweden. They identified two disturbing trends in the Swedish literary scene. First was the trend of centralization of literature and culture to the southern parts of Sweden. They felt that the strong and vibrant literary heritage of the north might soon be forgotten if the current trend continued. The second trend was the growing commercialization of literary festivals and book fairs, where sales numbers and marketing was obscuring the cultural and aesthetic values of prose and poetry.
What was to be done about this? Their answer was to form a forming a religiously and politically independent non-profit organization with the explicit goal to create a large and prestigious non-commercial literary festival based in Umeå, Sweden. Some people said it couldn’t possibly work, that Umeå was to far north to be able to be truly international in scope, that audiences and writers would not come.
Almost ten years later the verdict is clear. Littfest has been growing every year with more visitors, more authors and increasingly positive notice from national media. They have hosted talks and seminars with world famous authors from all over the world, including personalities such as Nawal El Saadawi, Vladimir Sorokin and Jeanette Winterson, as well as the biggest names from the Swedish literary scene: Torgny Lindgren, Kerstin Ekman, Kristina Lugn and Lena Andersson, among many others.
Littfest is now the largest independent literary festival in Sweden. In march every year more than 100 authors come to Umeå to participate in talks, seminars, exhibitions, film screenings and concerts together with more than 5000 visitors from all over the country. The northern isolation of Umeå has turned into an advantage and people visit Littfest just because it is a place where they can truly connect and engage with the authors. Today Littfest is exactly the kind of literary meeting place we felt was needed back in 2006.
